Spring is coming....

...or so they tell me. And once again I ponder having a vegetable garden. I ponder it every spring. Sometimes I have pondered it for nearly two days in a row. I actually did have a vegetable garden once. It was fairly amusing. We ended up with many giant zucchinis that no one really wanted after August even though they grew as large as some sort of plant from this ancient TV show that only I seem to remember. Who wouldn't want squash as big as baseball bats? Many people, apparently. There were also far too many tomatoes. Nothing much else we planted came up or survived long. I am not gifted with the greenest of thumbs.

My parents , on the other hand(s) seemed to have many green thumbs. The pictures below are from the mid 70s when my parents lived in a two hundred year old house that my dad refurbished as a retirement project. And they also grew large plants.

So, I think this year I will at least research growing things to eat. Seems like the right thing to do ( which almost guarantees that I won't do it ). There is a movement on to get the new president and his lovely family to plant one of these on the white house lawn. It's kind of a neat idea. Apparently there is even a facebook group encouraging this. But then there is a facebook group for everything in the known universe.

So, anyone out there have any good suggestions for instructional books on Vegetable Gardening For The Not Especially Talented And Not All That Motivated? Suggestions appreciated.

I know nothing about growing veggies. 'Cept for helping them out when I was 10.
Interesting concept though. I should get my kid on it...

So you come from a family with green thumbs. Perhaps your is just waiting to sprout! I've tried vegetable gardens on occasion with mediocre success. I am able to garden plants and flowers far better. And I frequently use vegetables for ornamental plants. Maybe you just need to shift focus.

Buy plants to start out with. It's hard starting seeds. Do you have an actual garden plot or containers?

It's really no more complicated than sticking them (the plants) in the pots and keeping them watered and in the sun. Maybe a little fertilizer.

I would love to be able to grow my own vegetables. When I was growing up, we ate only what we grew for the most part. My mother always said she wished she could find some cow seeds so she could grow beef in the garden too. LOL I unfortunately didn't inherit the gardening gene. I have a major brown thumb and that combined with the hot, Florida sun is a disaster to any gardening attempt. Good luck. I think you should do it. You can send me any extra tomatoes or zucchini. Mmmm Mmmmm zucchini bread.

hmmmmm... Stuffed zucchinis... an old friend of mine used to make the best stuffed zucchinis.. and mmmmm zucchini bread. Absolutely.

So, starting with plants? Or starting the seeds indoors? If I start them indoors when should I start them ( in New Joisy)?

tut- tut I am thinking actual garden plot.. We would have to ...um... do whatever one does to part of the yard to prepare it. Container gardens sound like an interesting plan , though...

huh. I don't like veggies. Maybe some cukes. But I'd grow herbs. Rosemary, thyme, stuff like that. That would be cool. Not sure where I'd put it all in my yard, but it's all farmland so the dirt is just the right kind!

A mean veggie garden? Is that where the veggies grow up and eat you?
